WOAHHH NELLLLY!
8 years just flew by. And here we are.
In quarantine.
Not gonna lie, I honestly forgot all about this blog. Not that I didn't love doing it, or that it wasn't important, but hey, a lot has happened in 8 years. "Life gets in the way, man!" Isn't that at you're supposed to say when you stop following your dreams? I dunno.
So let's see...what would my great great great grandkids wanna hear about if they ever stumbled upon this here blog somehow?...The fact that all we have is time right now due to this pandemic is so odd. I feel like I need to record something profound and meaningful.... Kids, in March of 2020 the world sorta shut down because a crazy new virus spread like wild fire and nobody knew how to control it. So everything closed and we had to stay home and stay away from other people as much as we could. If you were a 'glass is half empty' kinda person, this situation was bleak. We lost our jobs, our kids missed out on proms and graduations. We could no longer go out to dinner or see our friends....
ok I don't wanna go down that sadness spiral. What I mean to say,(I think) is that there is a sad part about your plans not panning out. Of course there is. Because plans are happy. Nobody "plans" to fail a test. We don't "plan" to cancel a road trip to Denver. We didn't plan this pandemic, and so here we are dealing with our vetoed plans because of it. It's put a pause on all of us, and maybe that's not a bad thing. Maybe our plans fall short of what we're really capable of and maybe we can just live in the moment and not worry about it so much. I don't know. What I do know is that the sun is out, it's a beautiful day, and I have no plans.

I have a pen problem.
Not a problem like, "I have an alcohol problem", because, I think that would mean I'm addicted to pens and I love pens and I can't stay away from the pens.
That's not the problem.
They don't like me. They run away. Or disappear. Or break. Or run out of ink. Whatever. But I've always had this problem. I can't find the right one to have and keep forever. They don't stick around. It's sad because I LOVE A GOOD PEN.
Who doesn't, right?
You know what's weird? I don't know your handwriting. I mean, if you are not the people i grew up with or live with now, I've probably never seen what your written word looks like. Isn't that weird??? Growing up in the 80's, we still got letters in the mail and wrote notes to each other in school. I knew my friends' handwriting very well. I'd be envious of someone's and try to copy it. I'd forge signatures sometimes just to see if I could do it. Handwriting is so telling about a person's personalities. I think it's sad that nobody really needs to WRITE words with their hands anymore using pen and paper. There used to be something so personal and real about getting a note in school from somebody. I LOVED getting notes. And did everyone do the 'lil' sis' / 'big sis' thing growing up? Like, if you were a new 6th grader and a 7th grader liked you, you'd be their 'lil' sis, and she'd sorta look out for you and stuff? And you'd write notes back and forth? Was that just our school? Am I remembering it right? I think I am. I have a feeling if I shared this little tidbit with my teen, she'd be all, "ummmmm ...LAME".
I liked things better then.
Before cell phones. Nobody had a cell phone and if you did, it was called a car phone and it stayed in your car. The internets weren't real then (are they real now?) and you had to read encyclopedias to do homework. I can still smell them. Old book smell. Mmmmm.
TV shows had scripts. We had Contempo Casuals. MTV played videos. We used film cameras and waited a whole day to get our film developed. (singles or double prints? matte or glossy?) Only the rich kids at private schools had to wear uniforms. We had to take a typing class. We were allowed to use our lockers. (They don't now in fear that students are hiding drugs and/or weapons) We had to learn spelling and grammar. The library had the dewey decimal system and card catalogs. There was no MySpace or Facebook or Twitter. We spoke to our friends face to face.
And we wrote notes. And I knew your handwriting.

soigotalotinmyheadrightnow...
and i gotta get it out. so here we are.
i'm drinking coffee to ease the cray cray (or does the coffee *cause* the cray cray?) and yeah...here we go.
I had the pleasure of seeing a film last night called Miss Representation. www.missrepresentation.org
I've always loved documentaries (and mockumentaries, duh) and this one really opens one's eyes to how womankind is represented in our culture. It's almost too much to talk about ..cause I can't get my brain wrapped around the fact that basically ALL MEDIA is controlled by mostly MEN. ALL MEDIA. So the things we hear and see, experience and 'learn', are, in a sense, fed to us by males.Let's think about that for a moment.
I'll give you a sec.
mkay. see?
It sorta makes sense, right? It makes sense that it comes from men that we see so much boob and leg on screen. It makes sense that we'd be bombarded with stupid reality shows about bitchy women who bicker and get bo-tox daily? (*side note: why are women immediately considered "bitchy" when all they might do is have an opinion? or just say 'no'? why?men do it all the time and we don't call them A-holes.)
annnycrap...
Enough about that. it's too much. It's too scary to think that our baby girls are growing up seeing DANCE MOMS fighting about what kid makes what jazz routine, or Disney princesses waiting desperately to be saved by their prince, or males somehow getting excited when girls fight (THIS was referred to, by the way, in a BARBIE MOVIE)..and that you have to be pretty to get noticed and taken seriously which is a double-edged sword because a LOT of the time, women AREN'T taken seriously BECAUSE they're pretty. You can't win. And this is EVERYWHERE. Movies about women trying to find the right guy because somehow they don't feel 'complete'...commercials and magazines with air-brushed, anorexic women who were TOO THIN in the first place before the photomashop dude ever got a hold of em. Girls now are never told:
YOU are smart naturally
YOU are beautiful naturally
YOU are WONDERFULLY UNIQUE
and you and YOU ALONE are the boss. YOU are the boss of YOU.
You don't have to make people happy. That's not your job. You don't have to look and act like everybody we see on t.v. or in magazines. THAT'S NOT REAL. You are smarter than that. You are better than all of it.
NOBODY SAYS THIS STUFF!!!!!!!!
WHY????
Well, I am.
So. HERE'S AN IDEA.
Let's be good grownups. Let's be good parents. Good influences. NICE people who do NICE things and take care of ourselves so that OUR kids see US being responsible and good.
Some ways to do this:
1. Let's stop complaining about our weight, shall we? Not that you shouldn't care about it, because OF COURSE that is a part of taking care of yourself..but l want that to stop being such a big stinking deal. I'm so over it. Eat healthy food. Don't buy your kids junk. Don't have it in the house. Sugar doesn't do anybody any good ever, so let's teach our kids to eat good stuff because it makes them feel good. NOT "don't eat this candy cause you'll get fat" but, rather "eat this apple cause it's good for you".
2.Let's tell our kids (I have 2 girls) that it's OK to get mad about stuff. It's OK to ask questions and it's OK to have an opinion and it's OK to say NO. It's not only OK. IT'S NORMAL AND AWESOME. Let's give our girls the control of their own bodies. THEY are the boss. LET THEM KNOW IT so NOBODY CAN TRY TO CONVINCE THEM OTHERWISE.
3. Let's turn off the stupid T.V. for crying out loud.
Wow this post sounds all soap-boxy. That was not my intent. I guess that movie last night got me more fired up than I thought.
I think I'm done.
My bff has convinced me to get a 'gratitude journal'. The idea is to write down things you are grateful for as they come to mind. It's usually a list of 5 things. You can also just jot down your endless brilliant ideas or funny things your kids say, whatever. Since I haven't found a journal that has spoken to me yet...(I only buy things that 'speak' to me) here is my first gratitude journal post:
1. my trusty laptop
2. the dog place that is bathing my dog right now so I don't have to do it
3. bubble machines
4. target
5. hearing "Let It Be" on the way home today and crying. It was good. (Thank you, Sir Paul)
Till next time. XO L

Bear Care
This is my dog.
His name is Bear.He seems to have way too much hair.
His hair is scattered about....everywhair. (sorry)
I'm telling you...I have a greenish brownish rug, and most of the time it looks greenish grayish from all the white hair lazily scattered upon it. It's nuts.
I've furminated (?) him. we brush him CONSTANTLY. You'd think he'd be Bald Bear by now. But he ain't.
IF I HAD A LOOM, ALL MY FRIENDS WOULD HAVE BEEN GIVEN DOG SWEATERS FOR CHRISTMAS.
Any pointers, dog lovers?
Thanks in advance, L

What I'm talkin about when I'm talkin about it.
Hi.
So.....yeah. I graduated hair school and took my practical exam. PASSED. After you pass your exam, you wait to receive your COSMETOLOGY LICENSE in the mail. So that's what i'm doing right now. While I wait....
I'm helping my BFF spread the word about her awesome new company called Urban Elixir. They are all natural cocktail mixers that pretty much make any party a ..ya know....PARTY. If you think about it, cocktail mixers are lame and jimmy buffet-y gimmicks loaded with sugar/high fructose corn syrup and a bunch of blech that NOBODY needs. These mixers are for people who love to live life, care about what they're putting into their bodies...and have a drink or two while doing it. Basically, being fabulous. It's all about being fabulous.
It's weird being out of school and not having to be there every second of every day. It was one of the hardest things I've ever done and I'm so glad I did it. I wasn't able to update this blog as much as I had initially planned because, well, I WAS ALWAYS AT SCHOOL.
It's been awesome to be able to be a mom again full-time. As soon as I'm ready, I'm looking to get work at a salon (or open my own salon on wheels...ya know..like a food truck but not..) I don't know...I like the idea (thank you, Cari Weinberg) So we'll see what happens.
Until then,

The downward slope
Hi.
Where was I???
So, it's been a while. It's september now and I'm still in hair school. Yep. Still here. I'm in Phase 3B now..(there are 4 phases) and I hope to graduate in December. WOOO HOOO!!
Gee...
so much has happened.
It's weird because, as my classmate so eloquently put it, "I spend more time with you clowns than I do with my own family!"
This is true.
I know more about these people than I ever hoped to know. But now that I know them, I can't imagine my life without them.
A quick where-I-Am-In-Hairschool-as-far-as-what-I've-learned Update:
1. Hot roots happen.
2. I could never do another perm again and be just fine with that.
3. People begin hair school with lonnnnng hair and leave with NONE. (will not happen to me.)
4. Standing on your feet all day is hard. The end.
5. New clients who re-book with you make you feel great and competent.
6. I am no longer afraid to apply a relaxer, thank you very much.
7. People lie about what they have done to their hair.
8. Some people cannot be pleased, and that's OK.
9. Everything takes longer than you think it's going to. EVERYTHING.
10. ALWAYS HAVE GUM. (*this is a good rule in AND out of the hair world)
I wanted the list to end at 10 just because lists should end at 10. But another thing I've learned is ALWAYS treat others with kindness and understanding. Everyone is dealing with struggle. Everyone is fighting a fight.
This industry is full of amazing, talented, and strong people who take care of themselves and others the best way they know how. Beauty is power, baby!!!
So...
I'm gonna be busy the next couple weeks working on my FACE-OFF project thingy. "Hey, Leanna! What is FACE-OFF???", you might be asking yourself. Well, I'm glad you asked. It's a hair show competition betwixt US (north dallas Ogle School) and the, um...Mockingbird campus. WE HATE EACH OTHER. hahah just kidding. um anywho, It's a pretty big deal for us. It's at the Lakewood Theater and I'm a competitor! I'm working on something really super neato... So..come on out! OCT 16!!! More deets to come! Right now I'm hittin the hay.
You're sweet for reading.
(or really bored).

Bleach stains.
SO, we went over foiling this week. Did my first partial hi-light! AND I cut Debra's hair again...(asked my instructor the best way to give her that "sorta choppy mullet...you know...like Joan Jett?" She said, "who?".........sigh) Anyway, I'll figure it out.
Here is a better photo of my up-do that turned out to be an up-don't....(i promise i had a vision) it's all about learning the execution...
On another note, I had a fabulous night out with my fabulous aunt, Nancy Lamb, who does amazing paintings. She takes pics from above her head without looking and paints what she gets. I love being there and getting to meet the people who love her and what she does. So fun.
Ok...so off to Lovie practice. Tomorrow I'm cutting my first HUMAN MODEL...who happens to be the mother of Kristen DeRocha, Connie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Wish us luck!!! xoL
