The downward slope

Hi.
Where was I???

So, it's been a while. It's september now and I'm still in hair school. Yep. Still here. I'm in Phase 3B now..(there are 4 phases) and I hope to graduate in December. WOOO HOOO!!

Gee...
so much has happened.
It's weird because, as my classmate so eloquently put it, "I spend more time with you clowns than I do with my own family!"

This is true.

I know more about these people than I ever hoped to know. But now that I know them, I can't imagine my life without them.

A quick where-I-Am-In-Hairschool-as-far-as-what-I've-learned Update:

1. Hot roots happen.
2. I could never do another perm again and be just fine with that.
3. People begin hair school with lonnnnng hair and leave with NONE. (will not happen to me.)
4. Standing on your feet all day is hard. The end.
5. New clients who re-book with you make you feel great and competent.
6. I am no longer afraid to apply a relaxer, thank you very much.
7. People lie about what they have done to their hair.
8. Some people cannot be pleased, and that's OK.
9. Everything takes longer than you think it's going to. EVERYTHING.
10. ALWAYS HAVE GUM. (*this is a good rule in AND out of the hair world)

I wanted the list to end at 10 just because lists should end at 10. But another thing I've learned is ALWAYS treat others with kindness and understanding. Everyone is dealing with struggle. Everyone is fighting a fight.

This industry is full of amazing, talented, and strong people who take care of themselves and others the best way they know how. Beauty is power, baby!!!

So...
I'm gonna be busy the next couple weeks working on my FACE-OFF project thingy. "Hey, Leanna! What is FACE-OFF???", you might be asking yourself. Well, I'm glad you asked. It's a hair show competition betwixt US (north dallas Ogle School) and the, um...Mockingbird campus. WE HATE EACH OTHER. hahah just kidding. um anywho, It's a pretty big deal for us. It's at the Lakewood Theater and I'm a competitor! I'm working on something really super neato... So..come on out! OCT 16!!! More deets to come! Right now I'm hittin the hay.

You're sweet for reading.
(or really bored).

Bleach stains.

SO, we went over foiling this week. Did my first partial hi-light! AND I cut Debra's hair again...(asked my instructor the best way to give her that "sorta choppy mullet...you know...like Joan Jett?" She said, "who?".........sigh) Anyway, I'll figure it out.

Here is a better photo of my up-do that turned out to be an up-don't....(i promise i had a vision) it's all about learning the execution...

On another note, I had a fabulous night out with my fabulous aunt, Nancy Lamb, who does amazing paintings. She takes pics from above her head without looking and paints what she gets. I love being there and getting to meet the people who love her and what she does. So fun.

Ok...so off to Lovie practice. Tomorrow I'm cutting my first HUMAN MODEL...who happens to be the mother of Kristen DeRocha, Connie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Wish us luck!!! xoL

I don't know everything.

A little something I've learned in hairschool. Wait, hair school?? Beauty school? Is saying "Beauty school" old-fashioned? Like Beauty Shop? Hmmm...
ANYWAY..
Hi! Thanks for reading again. Week 2 down!!!!! Let's see.....we learned how to do a roller set, (awesome)..a 9-section part....a long layered cut (fun!) ...and we also went over waxing and .....LASHES, girl. (see above photo)

We spend the days taking tests whilst listening to old Mariah Carey (I had a vision of love........) and a bunch of rap/pop music that apparently everyone else knows (well) and I've never heard.
But its really fun.

My awesome table mate is Ashley who has been in the Army and has 2 kids and a tattoo artist for a husband. I find her fascinating...

I love being surrounded by people who don't have anything in common with me but the love of making people feel good. One guy tans every morning. He's also flatlined before from a head injury and was brought back to life. Another young lady (20) takes care of her 4 siblings when she's not in school. One mom in my class has an autistic son. My instructor is married to an ex-Dallas Cowboy.
SEE???? SO COOL.

This is what it's about for me.

And making my life even more awesome than it is now.

TODAY I'm off to be in a photoshoot with this guy:

Should be fun!!!!! More later. Love you. L

Hair School Week 1

Week 1 down.
This week we:
1. went over the history of cosmetology
2. studied proper sanitation
3. practiced a round brush blow dry
4. straighted ethnic hair with a flat iron
I still can't believe there is a SCHOOL for this stuff.

We play with hair and makeup.  Basically, I go to a slumber party every day. Why did it take me so long to do this?????
I think I'm the second oldest in my class. There are all kinds of people here in such different phases of life. It's just interesting what brings people to that place of "it's time". Ya know?

Next week:
waxing and...
(wait for it......) CUTTING!!!!!

.......................................................(yay)

IWillDye4U

I'm not a writer.

So I don't know how this is gonna play out.

Basically, I'm 36 and have decided to go to hair school. It's something I've always wanted to do, and it just feels like it's time to do it.

I also have fabulous friends who do fabulous things and whenever those fabulous things happen, I plan to use this here blog to spread the word.

I'm glad you've stopped by. I'll try to keep the posts short, sweet, and hopefully somewhat interesting. So...yeah. Here we go.
